Artist Statement

Through my paintings and installations, I search for a new reality that turn ideas on their heads and break down preconceived notions. I picture my own fantastical land, mixing media and methods. Collaging elements in my work allows for changing contexts. My imagery and color are influenced by my travels to Mexico and South Africa as well as the painted landscapes and stories in Eastern art. Bright color, iconic forms, and storytelling are consistent themes throughout my work. I myself am a combination of European descent and I grew up in Virginia. The culture I know is made up of my Pennsylvania Dutch relatives, my multi-cultural surroundings, and the places and people I choose to encounter. My land is an out-lit for cultural exploration and contains its own language that offers expansive interpretations of existence.
